The first screen adaptation of the children’s literary classic, made only two years after Kästner published his globally popular adventure novel for children. Although other two later adaptations were made, this earliest version is considered the best ever. Emil is a boy from a modest family in rural Germany, travelling to Berlin on his own for the first time to visit his grandmother and bring his mother’s hard earned money. On the train he is robbed by a stranger, but the brave Emil will not quit and find a crew in the big city to help him catch the criminals.
