Just a few years after World War II, young Michael meets a woman named Hanna, twice his age, a mysterious and lonely woman. Their affair is passionate and their intense relationship, among other things, includes him reading her literary classics. However, Hanna soon disappears and Michael sees her again only eight years later when, as a law student, he attends a court trial for Nazi war crimes. Kate Winslet stars as Hanna, the role that earned her the first (and thus far only) Oscar, with young David Kross and Ralph Fiennes as Michael.

About the director Stephen Daldry

Stephen Daldry is a British director, equally successful in theatres, before moving on to film. His 2000 film debut Billy Elliot earned him his first Academy Award nomination for best director. It was followed by The Hours (2000) and The Reader. Both these films brought him new Oscar nominations, and their leading actresses, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet, respectively, won. He is the executive producer of Netflix’s hit serial The Crown, focusing on the life of the Queen Elizabeth II.
