Based on the novel from the award-winning author Joke van Leeuwen, the film tells the story of a war from the point of view of a 10-year-old girl whose father was the best pastry chef in town. Every day, her father bakes cakes and sweet treats of all sorts. Their lives are filled with joy and chocolate. But one day the war breaks out and Toda’s father leaves to the battlefield. Her grandmother, who is supposed to take care of her, secretly sends her across the border, where her mother lives. Toda, easy-going and practical as she is, makes important friendships on this dangerous trip and successfully copes with strange and demanding situations.
